This is Chuck. I had terrific memories growing up on the farm. When my dad retired we moved to a farm in Grayson County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Ohio County, Ky which is nearby. When my dad retired from working in Indiana he moved the family back to Kentucky.
We had 150 acres, plenty of room to work, play and explore. Did I tell you we had 2 caves on our farm?
I had already started the 8th grade when we moved. Mrs. Ira Young was our teacher and what a wonderful personality she had and was truly a wonderful teacher. It was great growing up in that kind of setting. As kids we got to know all our neighbors very well!
We raised a big garden with lots of vegetables. Mom canned so we had plenty of food to eat and stored some in our cellar. Some of my best memories are of breaking beans under the shade of the old maple trees. We also had fruit trees to make jellies and preserves.
We had so much freedom and fresh air and friends and family who loved to visit. We always had a roof over our head, plenty to eat, clothes to wear and shoes on our feet, what more could one ask for.
I can truly say I loved my life growing up, my parents, my brothers and my sisters. Those were wonderful times in which to live and I certainly cherish the memories.
After I graduated from high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps and after 4 years I received an Honorable Discharge.
As I got older I gained weight and when that happened my cholesterol went up plus a trace of sugar was found during a normal blood test. The doctor told me to diet and I was placed on 1200 calorie diet. In a few weeks another blood test revealed my blood sugar was normal in spite of the fact that diabetes ran in my family. Because of that I have, for the most part, watched my diet ever since!
I have also had trouble with my cholesterol being border-line high! For a few years I took a statin drug but was able to stop taking them because of lifestyle changes I made and do not take any medication at all.
The determining factor for my dramatic lifestyle change was because of what happened to my nephew. In the fall of 2018 he had a heart attack (in his 50’s) and because of other tests the doctors found he had lung cancer in the top lobe of one lung. The cancer was removed successfully and he was giving a good prognosis. During that time the doctors also found he had diabetes very out of control!
His doctor simply asked, “do you want to live?” I think like most people would he said yes! His doctor told him he had to make a lifestyle change that included watching some videos, getting and reading the book “How Not To Die” and going on a plant based diet! He did and shared that information with Mary & I and we’ve never looked back with any regrets and enjoy our lifestyle medicine adventure!
Because of various health issues in my own family in general, I’ve seen the results that come about because of making lifestyle changes. Along with a plant based diet we use essential oils for overall health benefits on a daily basis and have replaced all toxic chemicals in our home using oil infused products, cleaning, laundry and much more! It’s easy to be passionate about ones’ health when you see the benefit first hand!
